THE MAROON VOL. 81, NO. 11 FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2002 "For a greater Loyola" Shuttle service in the works Loyola to start its own van system beginning in spring By Rachel Ritter Staff writer The Loyola version of Tulane's "Safe Ride" program will be up and running on the first weekend of the spring semester. Last summer, SGA began investigating joining with Tul a n e University's "Safe Ride" program, a shuttle that buses students throughout the Uptown area, downtown and back to Tulane for a small fee. Loyola's participation in the program had been advertised throughout Summer Orientation. One week before the fall semester began, the expected partnership was called off, and it wasfinally completely rejected by Tulane at the end of October. "We are not looking at all to pursue a cooperation with Tulane," Nick Poche', Safeßide committee chairperson, said. He is a SGA Arts and Sciences representative, and a psychology and drama communications senior. The committee of fifteen students that had been working towards the partnership with Tulane switched gears to establish an "The most disappointing thing for me is that I was really looking forward to this setting a precedent for the two universities to work together," -NICK POCHE, SGA REP. Schiappa, professor and director of graduate studies in the Department of Communications at the University of Minnesota, criticized the current methods of analyzing pop culture by examining three different studies on "Will and Grace's" effects on viewer attitudes toward homosexuality. The Emmy Award-winning comedy series "Will and Grace" centers around the life of four friends: Will, a successful gay lawyer; Grace, a straight self-employed interior decorator; Jack the flamboyantly gay and self-involved neighbor; and Karen, an alcoholic socialite. "What Schiappa selected "Will and troubles me Grace" because of more is its historical what COlintS significance. as feminine "It is the first gn(j successful mascu|ine is mainstream show . . that feature two ClC^ openly gay, male, lead characters," he years ago, said. Schiappa attacked the study's claim that the show "feminized the gay characters" because of its highly selective process for choosing scenes used as proof. He also questioned the study's definition of feminine and masculine. "What troubles me more is what counts as feminine and masculine is not as clear as it was 50 years ago," Schiappa said. Schiappa refuted the textualists' study's statement that "Will and Grace" "infantalized the subversive See SHUTTLE, Page 2 See TV, Page 3 WHAT'S INSIDE Sports pages Opinion pages Editorial pages dj&timtt page 10 Lay old University New Orleans
