THE MAROON MAROON.LOYNO.EDU VOL. 79, NO. 08 hghgh I nyn/ii I iiircrsity .\c/r ()//C■C///C Student carjacked, robbed By Crystal Bolner Staff writer He had planned a quiet evening of studying at his favorite coffee shop. But those plans were interrupted when a man confronted Casey Saucier, 21, finance junior, with a gun. Saucier had parked three cars down from Rue de la Course coffee shop. When he left, he was caijacked. He described the caijacker as about 5 feet 10 inches tall, 160 pounds and approximately 25 to 30 years old with medium build and dark skin, wearing a white baseball cap, gloves, dark pants and a navy blue T-shirt that covered half of his face. Saucier had withdrawn $20 £ "If yOU do from the wha{ | {e|| yQU Whitney Bank , . ... ATM machine at ' Wofl t kill 5 3 3 5 yOU."f| Tchoupitoulas St. before driving his 1998 green Chevy Blazer to the coffee shop in 1100 block of Ninth Street. He said that as he got back into the truck the assailant told him, "If you do what I tell you, I won't kill you." Then the man drove the truck to a Whitney ATM machine at 1320 St. Charles Ave. and forced him to withdraw $400, Saucier said. New Orleans Police Department spokesman Marion Defillo said that the police believe the man followed Saucier from the bank. As of Tuesday, NOPD had not arrested anyone in connection with the case. But Saucier said that police were looking at ATM videos for evidence. The truck was later found in the 3800 block of Robertson Street, Defillo said. Besides money, the robber took credit cards, a cell phone and the truck, but let Saucier go unharmed after leaving the bank. Defillo said that students should try to visit ATM machines during the day in familiar surroundings and that they should always check for people loitering in the area. He said if they think anyone is following them, they should call the police immediately. "1 will never go back there by myself again," Saucier said. - COFFEE SHOP ASSAILANT, on what Casey Saucier, finance junior, should do while being carjacked and robbed. A SPORTING CHANCE By Leo Juarez Staff writer Communications sophomore Maggie Schaefer has played volleyball for years. After graduating from high school, she wanted to play on the collegiate level and considered schools that offered scholarships. But she wanted to make academics her top priority and chose Loyola 1 which offers no athletic scholarships. Now, seeing the level of competition the Wolfpack often faces, she said that she has occasional regrets. "Sometimes ] wish I would have gone to a 1 school where scholarships are given," Schaefer said. However, athletes like Schaefer may soon be eligible for hefty "participation awards" if a plan proposed by the Rev. Bernard Knoth, S.J., university president, goes into effect. Members of the athletic department favor the plan, but most would prefer scholarships. They argue that because Loyola offers scholarships for academics and music it should STAFF GRAPHIC BY ELIZABETH STUART Loyola celebration a week-long event Loup Garou festival included in Loyola Week observance By Matt Walter Staff writer Students and faculty will get more than a three-day weekend for this year's Loyola Day celebration. University Ministry has expanded the celebration into a weeklong event designed to include more of the student body in the commemoration of Ignatius Loyola and the Jesuit, Catholic identity of the school. Events begin Monday and will include an ecumenical service, an interfaith prayer service, guest speakers and displays on Jesuit history. The popular music festival, Loup Garou will also be part of the celebration this year. It will feature The Roots and will be held Saturday, Oct. 14, in the Palm Court. Sylvia Young, assistant to the dean of university ministry, said the celebration was changed to include more of the school and to teach the community the significance of Ignatius Loyola and the Jesuits. Loyola Day was previously coordinated through the Jesuit Center under the Rev. Clyde Leßlanc, S.J., former director. A committee of student leaders, faculty members, the Rev. John Weling, S.J., dean of University Ministry and other university ministry members decided to make the changes this year, according to Ryan Holmes, music education senior and Student Government Association president. "We figured it would be more likely that students would attend a week-long celebration," Holmes said. "I think the change to a week is good.
