The Maroon ESTABLISHED 1923 V0L.74 NO. 11 Loyola University New Orleans FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1995 Knoth reveals renovations for campus By DOMINIC MASSA Staff writer As the university braces for construction of both a new library and covered parking garage, the administration has released what it calls a "thinkpiece" on what the campus could look like once construction is complete. The sketch, prepared for the university by architects with the Mathes Group, shows both the future library (which will encompass the parking lot between Miller Hall and Holy Name of Jesus School) and parking garage, which will stretch from Stallings Hall to the rear of the Danna Center, along the border of the Loyola and Tulane campuses. Noticeably missing from the drawing, however, are the surface parking lots between Monroe Hall and Marquette Hall and between Miller Hall and the Peace Quad, as well as between the Danna Center and Buddig Hall. The preliminary drawing replaces those lots with green space, calling the area between Monroe and Marquette Halls "Palm Court," complete with a reflecting pool, covered walkways and benches, as well as trees planted across the campus. The Rev. Bernard Knoth, S.J., university president, said he is eager to enhance those areas, especially when green space on campus is at a premium. He added that his experience at Georgetown University demonstrated the need for the university to use space effectively. "My starting point on all this is that the one resource that's limited here is in fact the square footage of the ground we have here," Knoth said. "The fact that we're landlocked, I think, presses us even harder to be very creative about the way we use the land we have on campus." Knoth stressed that the drawing is only a preliminary plan for what future development might take place. "This is what I call a thinkpiece, to get people beginning to visualize what the campus might be like ... It's not so much a plan as it is something concrete for COURTESY OF THE PRESIDENT S OFFICE Knoth's suggestions to enhance the look of the campus with the addition of green space and a reflecting pool. Students lack interest for Secure system By JENNIFER LEVASSEUR Assistant News Editor The personal alarm devices expected to be installed by the department of Public Safety through Secure Systems, Inc., as early as September face an uncertain future due to lack of response by students to an interest survey conducted by the company, according to Patrick Bailey, director of Public Safety. Although some students felt much safer when carrying the PADs, interest among students was too low for the company to install the system. 'The response that they did get back was very positive; on the other hand, they did not get the volume of responses back that they were hoping for," he said. The main obstacle remains to be lack of funding. Secure System will not install the system because of low student FILE PHOTO Alarm boxes with blue lights were installed for the 90-day trial period, interest. The cost for Loyola to implement the system would be $800,000. It would cost an additional $75 per semester for any student choosing to purchase the device. Because students would not be required to purchase the PADs, the system Public Safety investigates harassing calls to LUCAP By STEPHEN STUART News Editor The Loyola University Community Action Program has become the target of two harassing phone messages threatening the organization for its involvement in a Nov. 4 protest on Freeport-McMoßan CEO Jim Bob Moffett's mansion. Public Safety investigator Roger Pinac said that the calls were in reference to the protest. "It was apparent... that the caller said Freeport's wanting the money back was a result of the protest and holds LUCAP responsible for the protest," he said. LUCAP has played an active role in the past few weeks in the controversy involving Loyola's relationship with Freeport-McMoßan. The protest, though not organized by LUCAP but by the environmental groups Earth First and the Delta Greens, became one in a series of events culminating in Moffett's request for Loyola to return the money that Freeport-McMoßan had donated for an environmental communications chair. Moffett announced at a press conference on the Monday after the protest that the university should return the gift because the position had not been filled in three years. He denied that Freeport-McMoßan's request stemmed from the protest. Some members of LUCAP attended the march on Moffett's home. Public Safety would not release the exact content of the messages at this time, explaining that it is continuing to investigate the incident. The threatening messages were left on the answering machine in the LUCAP office sometime between 9 p.m. on Nov. 8 and 8:30 a.m. the next morning, Pinac said. Each of the messages were recorded successively on the machine and lasted roughly a minute each, he said. Administration refrains from reprimanding protesters By NEAL FALGOUST Assistant News Editor After a week filled with rumors of possible sanctions against those who participated in the protest against Freeport- McMoßan, students and faculty are attacking the very thought that such a thing could happen. John Unsworth, psychology senior, calls for the suspension of all those involved with the protest. David Danahar, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, and Daniel Sheridan, assistant academic vice president, steadfastly reject all possibilities of sanctions. The English department reaffirms the rights of all to freedom of speech. A letter from Freeport- McMoßan claims that the truth about its overseas mining has been distorted. Joseph Mansfield, vice president for Institutional Advancement, attempts to explain the order of events leading up to the protest and beyond. And Jerrol Seaman, associate sociology professor and president of the Loyola Chapter of the American Association of University Professors, attacks the Rev. Bernard Knoth, S.J., university president, for making misleading statements that may have contributed to the rumors on campus. Danahar and Sheridan confirmed that sanctions would not be handed down to those involved. "If discussion is going on, it's going on self-generated," Danahar said. Sheridan commented that most of the rumors began when Unsworth called for the immediate suspension of all those involved with the protest at the Nov. 7 Student Government Association forum. Unsworth confirmed this in a phone interview. Knoth did not return calls pertaining to this matter. In a memo to Knoth, the English department "unanimously reaffirms the right of all students and faculty in the Loyola community to assemble and openly discuss issues." Andrew Macdonald, associate English professor and author of the motion, wished to take a public stand on the issue of freedom of speech on campus. "Loyola has an excellent tradition that we can all be proud of, and some of the circumstances suggested that this right needed reaffirmation," he said. Jason Weil, biology sophomore and LUCAP member, said he is encouraged by the support from both faculty and students. "There is faculty support. There is staff support. There is a lot more student support See DISCIPLINE, Pg. 4 See PLANS, Pg. 4 See SECURE, Pg. 4 See CALLS, Pg. 3 HHSLI ]Film buffs 1 Lolita production crew shoots scenes at Loyola for upcoming movie. hgh iPSSR Center will hold ■ StfEPt M ■ I CENT" I fl Kg I Converted stables make
