The MAROON • A Loyola tradition since 1923 • Loyola University New Orleans VOL. 73 NO. 3 SEPTEMBER 16,1994 Student accuses Loyola of racism By CHRIS BONURA Staff writer Some members of the National Baptist Convention, which held its annual convention in New Orleans, have accused Loyola University of allowing racist incidents to go unchecked and, unjustly Firing an African-American student employee. At a press conference last Friday at the Marriot Hotel, the Rev. John Jay Barfield, said that his step-son, William Frazier, chemistry junior, was fired from his job as a Resident Assistant for behavior that would have been overlooked if he were white. "There have been some extremely racial incidents on the campus," Barfield said. "1 have learned from talking to students over there that there has never been any white student brought to any kind of trial or anything. But when a black child is accused of something at Loyola there are drastic procedures. They do all kind of things such as hold these hearings on them." To give an example of this, Barfield said that when his step-son found a black doll hanging in the closet at his work-study job in the Rec Ilex, there was little effort to find out who was responsible for putting it there. "William frazier, the only black lifeguard over there, found a black doll hanging... A report was filed, but nothing was done as far as the school resolving it William has been threatened physically," Barfield said. Similar apathy, claim Barfield and Frazier, university authorities when Frazier's door was vandalized with racial slurs, such as "nigger go home." Barfield mentioned other incidents too. "I've talked to a young lady whose bed was urinated on by a white girl," he said. "The only thing that the school did was to transfer her to another room. But they never do anything punitive when something is done to black students over there. I'm shocked and amazed because this is a Catholic school, and I always did believe that the Catholic church is one of the most openly fair-minded institutions that you have in America." Barfield also claimed that white male students were not punished when they asked African-American female students to perform fellatio on them. Robert Reed, director of Residential Life, questions the validity of the Frazier's charges. "Some of the incidents that Will brought up occurred years ago. In some of the cases that he identified, we had taken disciplinary action against white students when this involved racism [against] black students. But he wouldn't know that because in a disciplinary case that's not something that we broadcast He would not Former Resident Aassistant William Frazier, chemistry junior, speaks of alleged racism in a press conference held at the New Orleans Marriott Hotel Sept. 9. Public Safety fires officer after accidental shooting By PETER REICHARD Business Manager There's a bullet hole in Public Safety's front window on the Broadway Campus across the street from a sign reading, "Firearm Free Zone." A statement prepared by Public Safety stated that an "officer was inspecting his weapon and unfortunately an accidental discharge occurred. No one was injured. The matter has been investigated and the officer is no longer employed with the university." The officer, Cory Turner, said the accident occurred last Friday "around noon" while he was standing next to the window inside the Public Safety office. Turner declined to comment any further. Investigator Roger Pinac said Turner notified Public Safety immediately. There was no attempt to hide anything ... on his part," Pinac said. Public Safety's Broadway office is located on the first floor of St Mary's Hall, across the street from the Dominican Center. The hole in the window is level with the spot where the Loyola Shuttle stops to drop students off, directly across from that angle.
