The Loyola Maroon Volume 71 No. 22 Loyola University New Orleans, Louisiana 70118 April 2, 1993 •1993 Student Government Association Elections • Schwarz, Mooney in runoff; turnout is record ly Tina Bergeron and Chris Bonura Staff Writers Erika Schwarz, communications senior, and Patrick Mooney, political science junior, will face each other in a runoff election to decide who will serve as the next Student Government Association president. Schwarz was less than 25 votes short of winning the election outright. Brady Lessard, history senior, finished third. Totals from the election, which drew the highest voter turnout in SGA history, were: •Schwarz—B7o •Mooney—sll •Lessard:—4o4 Schwarz won the primary elections, held Tuesday and Wednesday, receiving the majority of votes from all five colleges in the university. The breakdown was as follows: Arts and Sciences •Schwarz—333 •Mooney—296 •Lessard—2s2 Business •Schwarz—l36 •Mooney—BB •Lessard—76 City College •Schwarz—61 •Lessard—7 •Mooney—s Law •Schwarz—2Bs •Mooney—6B •Lessard—54 Music •Schwarz—ss •Mooney—s4 •Lessard—ls John Hernandez, second-year law student, won vice presidency, defeating Ed Aucoin, political science/ communications senior, with 932 votes to Aucoin's 708 votes. Aucoin won in three of the Five colleges, but Hernandez's overwhelming victory in the law school put him over the top, with 368 law votes to Aucoin's 41 law votes. Hernandez also won in the music school. For Congressperson-at-Large, voters elected Christi Fast over Jason Murphy and Jeff Rogers. Fast received 134 votes to Murphy's 106 and Roger's 60. OTHER OFFICES Arts and Science majors elected Brad Webb their A&S president. Webb overwhelmingly defeated Jim McPartlan for the seat, with 530 votes to McPartlan's 185 votes. Communications board change aimed at ousting media advisors By Chris Raphael Managing Editor A proposed change in the membership of the University Board of Communications may eliminate all media organizational advisers from serving on that board. In a Feb. 12 memo to Michelle Andrews, Acting Chair of the Standing Committee on Student Rights, Freedoms and Responsibilities, Vince Knipfing, vice president of Student Affairs, proposed an amendment to subsection four of the Student Handbook's statement on "Student Communications Media."
