Dr. David S wanzy, dean of Music, replaced Roussell as chairperson in early September. "It was a matter of length of serveice," Dr. S wanzy said in reference to Roussell's resignation. "It was time to pass ■ it [the chair] on." Roussell himself said, "I have no statement to make concerning my resignation."A written statement given to the Maroon by Dr. Swanzy states: 'The president felt that priorities for the academic areas in the University would be reflected in the appointment of an academic dean. As the senior dean and chairman of the ÜBC subcommittee on requests, it seems that I was a logical choice." The purpose of the ÜBC chairman is to keep the process of forming the budget on schedule, to keep records of actions I and to schedule meetings. There are meetings of all the membcrsmembcrs of the ÜBC once a month. The ÜBC is comprised of all the vice presidents, a representative from the president's office, all academic deans and the university librarian. Also on the committee is the dean of campus ministry, the director for institutional research, two faculty representatives (Dr. Jerry Hood, full professor of Finance and Dr. Marcus Smith, associate professor of English) and one student representative and his alternate (Scott Laragy, vice president of (he Student Government Association, and Thomas Daly, student president of the College of Business Administration). There are various subcommittees within ÜBC. These subcommittees report to the meetings of the full ÜBC. The subcommittee on revenue projections is chaired by John Eckholdt, vice president of Business and Finance. This committee dicloses total revenue, not net profit, to the ÜBC. The subcommittee on salary scales is headed by the Rev. George F. Lundy, S J., senior vice president and dean of Faculties. Junior Achievers brawl in lot By Brian Clarey Staff writer An experiment in cooperative education proved to be a miserable failure Monday when two Junior Achievement groups from New Orleans area high schools engaged in a small scale riot in the Communications parking lot on Loyola's main campus. The students hailing from St. Augustine and O. Perry Walker High Schools were on a one hour break when a verbal quarrel quickly degenerated into a frenzied brawl around 6:30 that night. The cause of the disagreement is unknown. In fact, little is known about the ruckus because the Junior Achievers involved made a clean getaway. They escaped when police arrived. There were rumors that those involved agreed to meet again in the same spot later that night to continue the nimble. Loyola public safety officers stayed on the scene until 9:30 p.m. in anticipation of another fight. None occurred. Junior Achievement is a national program designed to inspire the entrepreneurial spirit in high school students. The class meets in Monroe Hall every Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00. "This kind of event hardly ever happens," Sandy Gevin, criminal investigator, said, "and the Junior Achievement advisers assure us that this will not happen in the future." Rancid water runs foul, students disgusted By Kevin Patton And Chris Raphael News Editor and Assistant News Editor For over two weeks now, Loyola's water has tasted as if scooped from an unflushed toilet. But we are not alone. Foul water has plagued the Mississippi all the way up to Missouri. The water problem is caused by a two-methol isobomeol, a chemical produced by the decaying algae currently festering and attracting vermin in the "Mighty Miss," according to a report in The Times Picayune. In the same report, "Arthur Laurent, an official with the Army Corps of Engineers, said the Mississippi River has slowed to a flow rate of about 220,000 cubic feet per second." Because of the river's indolence, the sediment that it normally carries drops out. Instead of the river's usual murkincss, the water is clear — allowing sunlight to penetrate and accelerate the growth of the fetid algae. Loyola students seem to be, on the whole, rather disgusted with the situation. "The water stinks. If you imagine the Mississippi as the intestines of the United States, New Orleans is the colon," Pat Murray, visual arts senior, said. Michael Duplessin, a sanitation engineer for the WFF Management Co., was concerned for his life after he took a sip. "It tastes terrible. You might die and not know it. " Surprisingly, campus water received a favorable rating from some of its consumers. "It's tasty, very good," the Rev. Emmett Martin Bienvenu, SJ., said. "Considering the refuse that is dumped from Baton Rouge and the rest of Louisiana, we're pretty lucky." The Picayune reported that the Sewage and Water Board will try to remove the water's rancid taste by "lengthening the time lhai chlorine is used to disinfect the water before ammonia is added," according to Frank Lankard, spokesperson for the board. The process should take anywhere from one to two days.
