THE LOYOLA MAROON VOLUME 69, NO. 8 LOYOLA UNIVERSITY, NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA 70118 October 19,1990 Loyola budget misses by a million By Charles Lussier News Editor Loyola is currently facing a $1 million to $1.2 million budget shortfall for the 1990-91 academic year out of an originally projected budget of $60 million, John Eckholdt, vice president for business and finance, said. Eckholdt said the Board of Trustees projected a $ 126,000 surplus in the budget after their meeting in May. "We are not yet finished analyzing what we think is going to happen," he said. Eckholdt said the university is considering not Ailing some vacant positions and telling budget heads such as college deans and vice presidents to cut percentages from their budgets. The Rev. James C. Carter, S.J., university president, will have to make the final decision on authorizing cuts, he said. "Probably within the next two weeks we'll be able to make some type of decision," Eckholdt said. Eckholdt said he does not see much difference between the shortfalls in this year's budget and the deficit of last year's budget. "I think this year there's been a tendency to be overly optimistic in so far as the revenue that the university could generate to support their expenditures and the revenue just doesn't materialize," he said. He said some of the shortfall stemmed from overestimated fundraising and summer school returns that were lower than expected. Eckholdt said the drop in occupancy in the residence Lack of parking continues to vex Cabra residents By Courtney Sullivan Staff writer The book on Cabra Hall's parking woes added a new chapter this month when the office of Institutional Advancementcommandeered 12of the Broadway campus' 99 current parking spots for its October "Phonarama." Raymond Garofalo Jr., assistant director of Public Safety, said he reserved the spaces from October 1 to 25, Monday to Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. The Phonarama is an annual telephone fundrainsing drive held every October and run by volunteers. Martha Carr, communications senior and adviser to the Cabra Residence Council, said many different people park on the Broadway campus, including Cabra residents, students and faculty of the law school and the Visual Arts building and office of Institutional Advancement employees. LU community ponders filling Eidson's shoes By Tom Molanphy Assistant News Editor The decision of William Eidson, dean of Arts and Sciences, to step down from his position has left Loyola's administration in the dark, searching for a suitable replacement. Claire Paolini, associate dean of Arts and Sciences, described what qualities she would look for in searching for a new dean: "Someone who has been proven to be very versatile, because the main task for any dean is to keep a balance between the faculty and the administration," she said. Paolini said the new dean will decide what problems they want to tackle. "Anybody who fills this position will have his or her agenda set up and will have in mind what he or she wants toaccomplish," she said. Paolini said she did not feel there was any need to compare Eidson to her standards. "I really don't think there's a purpose in comparing a possible dean to an old dean. We're looking towards the future now," she said. However, David Vandersand, management and marketing senior and Student Government Association president, did comment on Eidson's past. "I have no stellar comments about the man, but nothing really against him, either. I believe his convictions and his heart were always in the right place," he said. "But not only do you have to keep a balance between the faculty and the administration, you have to keep a balance with the students as well," he said. John Mosier, English department chairperson, thought the idea of looking for a dean with good qualities was not the best way of searching for a person to fill the position. "What needs to be done first is a coming to terms of exactly what the job entails. There is a great temptation to start listing qualities to look for, but the college needs to do a lot more talking about what the job is," Mosier said.Mosier added that Eidson was "hired for a job that basically disappeared when he arrived. He was hired to get the faculty launched on a lotof projects, but, by the time he got here, all of the people who brought him here were either fired or gone." "It was kind of like a student getting excited about an internship, and it turns out all they really wanted was someone toempty the waste baskets," Mosier said. Julian Wasserman, professor of English, also used comparisons to explain the situation. "A university is like a tapestry — each constituency is pulling in its own direction. We need a dean who will keep all the constituencies pleased and keep the tapestry from becoming warped," Wasscrman said. David White, Biology department chairperson, thought that the new dean would have to try and keep faculty accountable for their actions. See Budget/page 5 See Pariiing/page 5 sdfds
