THE LOYOLA MAROON VOLUME 69, NO. 6 LOYOLA UNIVERSITY, NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA 70118 SEPTEMBER 28,1991 Dean Eidson decides to call it quits By Tom Molanphy Assistant News Editor After almost a year of keeping the administration guessing, William Eidson, dean of Arts and Sciences, turned in his resignation Tuesday. Eidson announced last Oct. 26 that he was looking for employment at other universities. His resignation becomes effective at the end of July 1991, Eidson said. "It's time the reins of this job be handed over to someone else," he said. "The way I see it, a person enters a job like this with a certain number of chips. As the years go by, you have to use more and more of your chips. I've simply run out of chips," Eidson said. "It's a very consuming type of job without a lot of help, and we've gone through a lot of budgetcuts lately. These things take their toll," he said. Although he has entertained numerous offers, Eidson said, he has yet to be hired by another university. "If I can't find a job elsewhere, I might end up teaching at Loyola," he said. Eidson said he will leave with a positive relationship with the administration and a "deep concern" for Loyola's future. "I think I've done everything I can here. It's time for someone else to step in with a fresh viewpoint which will move thecollege in new directions," Eidson said. He said he faced the two major tasks of improving faculty and student quality when he took the position of dean in June 1985. "I've always had one bottom line: Quality. Compromise quality and you compromise everything," he said. In a teller entitled 'The Dean's Vision" that was recently released to the College of Arts and Sciences, Eidson said he felt he "improved faculty quality through program cancellations and starts, replacements, early retirements, and additions." Student quality was improved by "instituting testing and placement in mathematics and foreign language, strengthening the English placement process, strengthening the remedial programs, and adding a true remedial English course," according to the letter. In a Nov. 3,1989 issue of The Maroon, Eidson said his decisions as dean were often subject to criticism. He also said his most controversial decisions were often personnel changes. In March 1989, Eidson appointed Dr. John Mosier, professor of English, as chairperson of the English department, overruling the department's recommendation of William Cotton, assistant professor of English, as chair of the department. Eidson, along with the Rev. George F. Lundy, senior vice president and dean of Faculties, suspended Dr. Stephen Scariano, associate professor of mathematical sciences, in October 1989. In a letter at the time, Lundy charged that Scariano falsified vita information and was responsible for "outbursts," which Lundy said "have caused some concern on the part of some people in the [math] department for their personal safety." The University Rank and Tenure Committee later exonerated Scariano. Eidson, in his November Maroon interview, said that "Some people don't Photo by Charles Baker Stepping down — After five years as dean of Arts and Sciences, William Eidson will leave Loyola in July 1991. Decision sends Micro Service Center packing By Jacques Billeaud Staff writer Students and faculty may soon be searching the Danna Center basement for repairs for their microcomputers. The Loyola Micro Service Center, across from the Micro Center store, will move out of its present location on the first floor of the Danna Center by Oct. 15 in order to make way for a new travel agency office, Vincent Knipfing, vice president for Student Affairs, said. The Danna Center and Academic Computing Services, which runs the service center, already had a written agreement stating that if the university needed the space, the Micro Service Center would move, Knipfing said. He said that with the service center's move toa new location in the DannaCenter, student and faculty would have more services to choose from on campus. Scott Shaw, Micro Center manager, and Herbert Nickles, director of Academic Computing Services, refused to comment. Charles "Dusty" Miller, Danna Center director, said Marriott Dining Services will use the office of the Danna Center's present travel agency, S/J Travel, for a new store that will provide prepackaged meals as well as function as a convenience store. Either S/J Travel or an unnamed travel agency will rent the Micro Service Center's present space, Knipfing said. S/J Travel could not be reached for comment. The Danna Center offered the Micro Service Center space in the basement of the Danna Center, Knipfing said. Allen Sparks, assistant director of Academic Computing Services, said the two proposed locations need basic remodeling such as proper lighting, carpeting, painting and minor electrical renovations. The remodeling would ensure that the service center would have a dry and appropriate environment to service computers if it moves to the new spots, he said. Sparks said the Danna Center has locations vulnerable to flooding and tried to offer the service center a spot with no possibility of flooding. The Danna Center and Academic Computing Services, however, do not have the money to do such renovations, Sparks said. A decision has not been made in regard to the new location of ihe service center, he said.
