THE LOYOLA MAROON VOLUME 69, NO. 5 ' LOYOLA UNIVERSITY, NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA 70118 1 ' SEPTEMBER D?90 SGA hashes out budget for 1990-91 By Charles Lussier News Editor The Student Government Association, after two weeks of committee hearings and meetings, should soon finalize its budget allocations for Fall 1990. The SGA, according to the minutes for their Sept. 11 meeting, has amassed $65,000 in gross funds, which, after internal and external expenses and a leftover profit of $2,500 from last year, amounts to $41,800 for organizations applying for funds this semester. David Vandersand, management and marketing senior and SGA president, said the SGA miscounted its funds for this year and there was actually $70,000 in gross funds. Over 35 organizations requested funds before the Sept. 13 deadline and made presentations at the SGA Ways & Means Committee hearing held that evening. Original requests totaled $72,903. The committee then held a meeting Saturday to decide the amount of each individual allocation. Each request went through three rounds of cuts. The first cut all requests not allowed by SG A bylaws, including requests for office supplies and prb.es. The second cuts were based on demonstrated necessity; the committee agreed to fund only those programs absolutely necessary to the operation of each organization. In the third round, the committee went over its previous cuts and decided to add $737 overall to the budget. The final figure after all three rounds was $36,679. The total cuts amounted to roughly half the original requests. Sorority, UPB go head to head with functions By Rachelle Hardin Staff writer The University Programming Board's Fall Semi-Formal will compete against Theta Phi Alpha's Dixie Brewery party, which was unexpectedly rescheduled for tonight. Dixie, which was scheduled for Saturday Sept. 22, decided to reschedule the event to avoid a Greek conflict of events, said Julie Brosnan, president of Theta Phi Alpha. At the Greek calendar meeting, Brosnan said, she realized Dixie conflicted with the dates of sororities Alpha Chi Omega and Gamma Phi Beta's retreats. Brosnan said the loss of the two groups would have hurt Dixie attendance. "Dixie draws the Greek community and without two sororities it would not be a success," Brosnan said. "The Greek system tries to work as a whole and not have problems from within," she said. Photo by Charlie Baker Nothing to hide?— Alisa D. Applegate, German sophomore, argues with Cecil E. Elections unable to attract many voters to polls By Charles Lussier News Editor SGA offered students Monday and Tuesday their inalienable right to vote. Students, however, chose not to exercise that right. Unofficially, voters cast only 308 votes in the Student Government Association election with the law school contributing 138 of those. Voters elected nine new representatives for eight different positions. The positions included freshman representative spots for Arts & Sciences, Business, Music and Law School. An upperclassman representative seat was available for Business, as were positions for City College and transfer representatives. Voters also selected a City College delegation representative. Of the five colleges, only the College of Art & Sciences and the Law School had any major response. In the College of Arts & Sciences, seven candidates ran for three freshman representative positions. Maria Graesser, political science freshman, and Lori Angel, political science freshman, filled two of the spots. Angela Adamo, visual arts freshman, and Lorraine Gould, political science freshman, will enter a runoff election for the third scat. "We're good friends, so it's kind of strange running against her. We'll have to wait until Tuesday night before we know who won," Gould said. David Vandcrsand, management and marketing senior and SGA president, said SGArules state thatacandidatemust receive at least 18 votes to be elected. Adamo and Gould both received 16 votes. "Even if one of the girls had gotten 17 votes, she couldn't have won the position," Vandcrsand said. Turnout in olhereleclions was very poor. The Business Upperclass election drew 51 votes, but none of the other elections attracted more than 10 votes. Three candidates ran uncontcstcd. Eric Miller, music freshman, captured the music freshman representative seat. Patrice Sanders, sociology senior, won the City College representative post, while Connie Parker was elected as president of the City College delegation. Shawn Lamb defeated Rebecca Gardeblcd to become the transfer representative. Donna Delle won over Mark Hennen in the Business Uperclassman representative election. Majors and classifications for Parker, Lamb, Gardebled, Delle and Hennen were unavailable. Christine Harvey, international business freshman and winner of the business freshman election, expressed dismay about the lack of information supplied to new representatives. "All I found out at the SG A office is that I won. I really have no idea what my duties entail," Harvey said. Vandcrsand said that in the future, the SG A will try to publicize their fall elections more than they have in the past. "We need to advertise more to get students to vote," he said. He added that the SG A has had this problem for a long time. See SGA/page 7 See Theta Phi/page 7 llllUliUuuiiK '""nliiimlhimmiiiiiiii »l :^;;::;:;:JBjijl|iiiA|j|JßiB^ \W W'Hllllillllllliii,, "^
